First Tee Mission

To impact the lives of young people by providing educational programs that build character, instill life-enhancing values, and promote healthy choices through the game of golf.

First Tee Vision

A Central Valley where every child grows up with confidence, character, and a sense of belonging—on and off the course.

About First Tee

Our work at First Tee is not about improving your golf score; it’s about strengthening what you bring to everything you do, including golf. No matter the course, we grow from the challenges we face on it. We believe that golf provides a powerful vehicle to help kids build inner strength and skills that they can take to everything else they do. Character is what you bring to everything you do. It’s what signifies to the world what’s inside of you. It outlasts genius and talent yet propels both. It’s what we are admired for and remembered by. It’s what transforms piercing words to inspire you forward rather than tear you down. And it’s what allows you to walk away from failure determined, not defeated.

Because at First Tee – Central Valley, we are Building Game Changers!

That’s why we exist: to enable kids to build the strength of character that empowers them through a lifetime of new challenges.

FAQs

Do I need to be an experienced golfer to become a First Tee coach?

No— golf is the name, but mentorship and care is the game. We provide basic golf skill training so you can feel confident enough to get kids swinging and centered enough to focus on what really matters— pursuing goals, using good judgement, growing through challenges, collaborating with others, and building a positive self-identity.

How does First Tee and its coaches keep kids safe?

In addition to ensuring appropriate adult supervision to maintain a safe physical environment, we adhere to strict national SafeSport standards. First Tee requires all employees, coaches, volunteers, and board members to complete comprehensive background checks and participate in in-depth training focused on youth safety. This training covers recognizing and responding to inappropriate behavior, maintaining appropriate boundaries, and effectively intervening when concerns arise. All training is provided by First Tee and is designed to equip adults with lifelong skills that promote safe, respectful, and welcoming environments for young people.

What is the time commitment like as a First Tee Volunteer Coach?

Volunteering as a First Tee Coach can look like one early evening a week, assisting with a couple of sessions, and being home in time for dinner. But everyone’s favorite day to coach? Saturdays! Four hours on the green with excited kids who are ready to learn goes by so quickly, and our coaches say it was more fun than the time they would have spent playing a round of golf.

When does First Tee start and end?

First Tee has four recurring sessions every year, and families have the option to register their child each season.

What are the perks of becoming a First Tee Volunteer Coach?

Many! Studies show that adults who volunteer in youth-serving programs and participate in intergenerational social connections experience improved mental and physical health outcomes, increased sense of hope and life satisfaction, and longer life spans. First Tee understands the value our Volunteer Coaches derive from the program, and we lean into that by offering additional fun social experiences and volunteer recognition. Monthly Lunch & Learns will be a space where coaches can experience expert-led discussions on everything from what children face in the world off the green to how to improve their swing on the green.

Do we need to bring equipment?

Volunteers are encouraged to bring their own equipment; however, it is not required.
